Ichiyou
(One leaf)
The meaning of Ichiyou in Japanese is 'one leaf', when fully open, it has 20-40 petal blossoms, a single pistil ( looks like a leaf) protrudes from the center, there comes the name Ichiyou.
An abundance of inner white petals, encased in a pale pink outer layer, give this sakura flower a subtle color. Bright green leaves surround the sakura blossoms.
Kanhizakura
(Commonly seen in Okinawa)
Aren't limited to mainland Japan, Sakura tree also can be found on the warm southern island of Okinawa, and you can found this special sakura of its own in Okinawa.
This sakura may not look like typical sakura blossom, but this type of cherry blossom tree is celebrated not only in Japan's Ryuku Islands, but also in Vietnam and China. Kanhizakura is also known as Taiwan Cherry Blossom, bellflower cherry or the Formosan Cherry. One more tip! Kanhizakura is one of hte earliest blooming sakura, as early as January!
Kikuzakura
(How cute it is!)
Kikuzakura translates to "chrysanthemum cherry blossom" due to its resemblance to Japan's beloved Kiku(chrysanthemum flower). it can be recognized by its typical pom-pom apperance, surrounded y large leaves. The soft pink petals of each sakura can reach up to 130!
This variety blooms late in the season, it can be seen in Tokyo area around early May.
Ukon
(Rarely to see a vivid yellow sakura in Japan)
Not a big fan of color pink or white? Try this yellow-hued blossoms sakura named Ukon! In Japanese, Ukon stands for turmeric, the spice tat gives indian curry its yellow color, also widely used in Japan as hangover relief medicine.
Due to a strong similarity, these curry colored flowers also became known b the same name. this is another Yaezakura varieth, which petals usually exists between 15-20 per blossom.
Ukon roughly blooms the same time as Ichiyou, usually mid-April in Tokyo.
Fugenzou
(This sakura is named after an elephant!)
Fugenzou in Japanese us translated to "Samantabhadra elephant", which is a reference to the Bodhisattva often depicted mounted on an elephant in Buddhist artwork. In Muromachi Period(1336 to 1573), people believed the pistils of Fugenzou sakura to resemble the image. You can easily recognized this cherry blossom by its incredible number of petals, sometimes as many as 40 per blossom, and its jagged leaves. Main color of Fugenzou is pink, with a tinge of red.
As another late blooming sakura, typical peak tie of Fugenzou is in mid to late April in Tokyo.
